Wawrinka Backhand in Super Slo Mo

Published: July 1, 2015

Wawrinka is not the best mover on your but he more than compensates with the immense power he generates on his ground shots especially his backhand. Here he demonstrates great preparation with a superb hip & shoulder turn prior to the ball bouncing. This allows him to get the racket through to contact in front of the body regardless of the speed of the oncoming ball.

Note also that his weight is going back & to the side on this backhand, highlighting that it’s not the weight going forward that is key. It’s the amount of rotation that generates the power irrespective of the direction of his weight transfer. He can hit huge backhands without his weight transferring forward.
